Wells Fargo Case Study: When Pressure Compromises Trust

When Performance Pressure Overrides Principle

What Happened

Wells Fargo employees engaged in improper sales practices, including:

  • Opening unauthorized accounts
  • Transferring funds from existing accounts to unauthorized accounts
  • Applying for credit cards without customer consent
  • Enrolling customers in online banking services without consent

The CFPB’s consent order noted that Wells Fargo’s own analysis identified over 1.5 million deposit accounts that may not have been authorized.

Leadership Lesson

Pressure does not create integrity. Pressure reveals what the culture truly values.

When performance targets become more important than ethical behavior, people begin to believe that results matter more than how those results are achieved.

Reflection for Leaders

This case challenges us to ask:

  1. What are we rewarding?
  2. What are we ignoring?
  3. Where might pressure be shaping behavior?
  4. Are our controls strong enough to detect what our culture may be encouraging?
  5. When numbers look good, are we asking how they were achieved?

Wells Fargo case is not simply about a banking scandal. It is a culture and leadership lesson.
